Decatur, Alabama Realtors took a momentary hiatus from the workday Tuesday morning to stop at a local warehouse, local news station ABC 31 reported.
“What we’re doing is we’re trying to bring a little happiness to the people that are in FEMA trailers who have lost everything across the state of Alabama,” says Realtor Patti Lambert.
“These boxes are called ‘Welcome Home’ baskets. We are trying to put as many as the things we can that will enable them to take the trailer and make it a little more at home and not just a house,” says realtor Kim Hallmark.
The Realtors gathered about 50 household goods for each box, then delivered them later in the day. The deliveries were well received by affected tornado survivors, many being extremely grateful for the aid.
“When we deliver them we have grown men jumping up and down, people crying. A hug and a conversation are free, but the basket is worthwhile to help them,” says Lambert.
The Realtors, flooded with the spirit of volunteerism, said it was the least they could do for the FEMA trailer residents.
“We make our living trying to help people not only buy and sell houses but we hope part of that is helping them make it a home and providing a home for their families. This is just a one small way that we could do that,” says Hallmark.
They said they had been delivering these ‘Welcome Home’ baskets for around a month so far and plan to extend their work throughout the coming holidays.
ABC 31 has also issued a word of warning for those living in FEMA trailers. Reportedly there are some individuals approaching residents and asking for money or, in some cases, threatening to take their trailers away. ABC 31 has been told this is a scam and have advised people to contact their local law enforcement agency with any reports of suspicious individuals.
