Like just about everyone else in the world, we were beyond excited to hear that, more than 50 years after the publication of “To Kill a Mockingbird,” Harper Lee would be publishing a sequel, “Go Set a Watchman,” once again set in the fictional town of Maycomb, AL.
So excited were we, in fact, that we immediately tried to see if Lee’s childhood home—in Monroeville, AL, widely believed to be Lee’s inspiration for Maycomb—might still be standing. (And, if it was, to find out what it last sold for, whether the kitchen needs a redo, and, most important, is there a hot tub out back?) Sadly, the home she grew up in on South Alabama Avenue was torn down and is now occupied by … Mel’s Dairy Dream.
OK, Plan B: What homes are currently for sale in Monroeville? We found a handful of charming (and affordable) homes on the market and pulled a notable quote from each listing. While they may not measure up to Lee’s classic prose, they’re worth a read.
